Strange Habitat

This project draws from modular housing (Nakagin Capsule Tower, Habitat ‘67, The Plug-In City) and modular construction (Buckminster Fuller, Pneuhaus’ Pneumatic Masonry projects, Foldhaus’ Radialumia) techniques as inspiration for a continuation of experimental form and space. “Strange Habitats” relies on the organization of the high-order polyhedron, icosahedron, in order to place spheres and connecting limbs. Geometric modelling based from the icosahedron uses a combination of piping and mirroring to generate a kind of spaceframe dodecahedron. Furthermore, the icosahedron is parameterized using Grasshopper3D and KangarooPhysics, which anchors the polyhedron’s vertices to create an alternative form for organization of form and space.
